With the aim of completing a very successful first stage of the VLIR-UOS programme in Santiago de Cuba, the TP1, directed to develop the Technological Infrastructure for Computerization and Communications, is ready to contribute to the doctoral training of its specialists at the Universidad de Oriente.
MSc. José Cuza Freire, local leader of the TP1, explains that the perspectives are channeled into continuing to strengthen the computing infrastructure in important areas of this academic institution as well as becoming an important doctoral program. "We will work with an emphasis on Applied Computer Science and expect to receive very good research projects in January 2019".
-The infrastructure is one of the aspects that can be measured, seen, felt, as part of the VLIR programme at the Universidad de Oriente. How much will they advance in the future?
"Priorities are given to the least favored faculties so far, and, of course, the first level majors, which are: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering and Automatic Control Engineering. In Cuba, the Ministry of Higher Education awards the category of first-level majors taking into account the use of computing technologies to these specialties, since they need computers with higher and better performance more than others. However, VLIR equipment has already been installed for the use of teachers, secretarial staff and other areas. "
As for Internet access - Dr. Cuza Freire specifies - the programme has permitted the bandwidth extension and other benefits are perceived likewise. "We have also donated two 10 computer-laboratories to the Instituto Superior Minero Metalúrgica de Moa for the installation of a free software laboratory. Another laboratory has been donated to the University of Guantánamo. Specialists from both academic institutions participate in all the workshops we carry out and they have earned these two laboratories after the presentation of their projects”.
Last June, MSc. Cuza, along with other members of his team, visited the University of Ghent in Belgium and the University of Arns in the Netherlands, where they exchanged with wireless network managers and discussed topics related to Wi-Fi technology, WLC best practices, existing topologies, among others.
Among the most important results of this stage of work, TP1 states that it has upgraded the services in the Uonet, developed the wifi topology in this university and contributed to the training of the programme members and other related specialists.
